What Is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment that uses micro crystals to lightly peel the skin, which encourages the growth of new tissue. During treatment, the uppermost layer of the skin is gently removed, eliminating any dead skin cells, impurities, or debris there. This process does not use chemicals, needles, or lasers, so patients get beautiful skin rejuvenation with virtually no downtime. Our medical spa uses this treatment to improve the appearance of all of the following:
How Does it Work?
During treatment, our practice’s medical esthetician, Deanna Bain, aims a small stream of crystals at the area through a microdermabrasion handpiece. As these crystals hit the skin, they gently scrape away the dead skin cells and impurities at its surface. The handpiece gently extracts the debris, as well as the remaining crystals.
These crystals don’t just help remove impurities from the uppermost layer of the skin—they also help jumpstart the body’s process of collagen creation and tissue regeneration. Collagen is one of the skin’s most important structural proteins, providing it with extra volume, fullness, and strength. As more collagen forms, the skin becomes smoother, tighter, and more youthful looking. Because it takes time for collagen creation to take place, patients gradually see the full results of their microdermabrasion procedure in the weeks following treatment.
Typically, microdermabrasion procedures take between 30 to 60 minutes to complete. While patients see some visible results after one treatment, usually 5 to 12 treatments (spaced two to three weeks apart) are needed to see the full potential of the treatment.
Are You a Good Candidate?
Most people that are interested in renewing and cleansing their skin are potential candidates for a microdermabrasion treatment. Ideal candidates must be in good health and have realistic expectations for the procedure.
